We find new ways to bring families, friends, consumers and providers closer together by sharing insights and techniues that help us. We monitor federal, state and local legislation to improve laws and services for the mentally ill. We advocate for improved treatment rehabilitation services and community support fro persons with mental illness. We welcome parents, relatives, friends, professionals and consumers to share the challenge of living with mental illness. A mental illness is a brain disorder that causes severe disturbances in thinking, feeling and relating to other people. Mental illness can affect anyone, regardless of race, age, gender or intelligence. on any given day, 285,000 Tennesseans experience mental illness. Depression is a very common illness. We all experience ups and downs, but a person with clinical depression feels so sad that he or she finds it hard to function at work, at school or in relationships. Bipolar Disorder (also known as Manic Depressive disorder) is a chemical imbalance in the brain that causes a person to cycle between period of frenetic activity and deep depression. Schizophrenia damages a person’s capacity to express feelings appropriately and think clearly. Someone with schizophrenia may hear voices, have terrifying thoughts and feel cut off from others.
