- Gather relevant stakeholders and clearly divide what should be handled by whom.
- Ensure the child is evaluated for special education eligibility.
- Ensure all records acquired and organized.
- Appoint educational expert for advice.
- Push parent (or child 18 or over) to hire a special education lawyer or appoint a lawyer to represent the parent of the child.
- Understand definitions of special education terms.
- Insist on current IEP and notice of placement.
- Use court’s authority creatively to ensure the child gets needed services.
- Ensure the child resides in the LRE that is consistent with community safety and educating the child.
- Recognize your accomplishments on behalf of the child, family, court, and community.
