New Guidance: When Parents Request Evaluation Regardless of Where in the RTI Process

Update from TN Department of Education with OSEP Memo Clarification

As LEAs begin implementation of Tennessee’s RTI² Framework, the department would like to remind districts of the procedures required when a parent requests an evaluation. As referenced in this memorandum issued through the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP), a Response to Intervention (RTI) process cannot be used to delay or deny an evaluation for eligibility under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

Step by Step Self Advocacy Booklet

Emily on computer at schoolThis is a phenomenal resource created in England for kids on the spectrum, but it could be used as a template by anyone, regardless of diagnosis.  It is a great resource for parents to walk through with kids, or for a student to work through on his own.  It covers topics ranging from communication, support system, housing, employment, financial issues, education, training, friends, etc.

Team of Special Needs Ministry Leaders Attend Accessible Kingdom Conference

Nine of the eleven from Chattanooga who attended the Accessible Kingdom 2014 Conference in Birmingham, Alabama. Pictured with Stephanie Hubach, author of Same Lake, Different Boat.

Such a blessed weekend…I can write words, but I can’t adequately describe it. Worship with brothers and sisters in Christ. Training alongside ministry partners. Networking with peers. Learning from mentors. Solidifying old friendships. Making new friends. Sharing deepest hurts. Celebrating greatest victories. Sorting out accessibility disasters. Brainstorming strategies and solutions for the future. Praying for churches, special needs ministries, and each other. Tears. Laughter. Making memories to last a lifetime…these are the things of which the best road trips are made.
