This workshop is designed for individuals with disabilities and their families who are in the process of preparing for transition and professionals involved in the transition planning process. Participants will learn about issues such as: Your rights & role in transitioning from High School, components of a Transition Plan, how to develop an appropriate Transition Plan, Employment, Independent Living, Keys to navigating the adult service delivery system including Social Security, Vocational Rehab., Medicaid Waiver, and many other related topics.
This workshop will be taught by Joey Ellis, STEP, Inc. Joey is STEP’s Regional Coordinator for Middle Tennessee. He became part of the STEP team in July of 2011. Joey holds a B.S. Special Education from the University of Tennessee at Martin and has 5 years of teaching experience in both CDC and Resource settings. As a person who experiences disability, a mild form of Cerebral Palsy, Mr. Ellis had an IEP growing up. He watched as his parents advocated for his rights and eventually began advocating for his own rights. These life circumstances led him to pursue a degree in Special Education and a career helping both students with special needs and their families. Joey’s areas of expertise and special interest are in transition planning, Autism, and Cerebral Palsy.
